Should You Buy an Onn TV? A Breakdown on What You Get

The Onn televisions that we will be reviewing today are going to start with the smallest offering of 42 inches and will go up to the 70-inch size. This way you can scoop on what to expect at the different sizes and there is some variance so you’ll want to pay attention.

Price

First off, from a price perspective, these televisions are next to impossible to beat. Walmart has always been good at providing the lowest prices when it comes to just about anything and the Onn televisions are no exception, with the 42-inch model starting as low as $88 and the enormous 70 inches Onn 4k at $448. You really can’t beat the cost, but what are you really getting?

Features

Summary of the features:

Built-in Ruku making Onn a Smart TV
4k high-quality definition
3 HDMI ports and a port for a LAN cable for connecting your Internet
1 USB connection, 1 optical, 1 coax, 1 composite, and 1 headphone connection

The Onn models are Roku Smart televisions and if you’ve never experienced Roku then you are in for a treat. Roku offers you thousands of free channels and you can also add paid subscriptions to your favorite content through vendors like Netflix, HBO, and more.

It updates itself and is controlled easily by a remote so that you can search through to find exactly what you want to watch.

With the exception of the 42 inch Onn model, which is 1080pi high definition, the models we are reviewing today are all 4k definition. Imagine how it was when you saw your first 1080p high definition television and multiply that by 4.

This is because 4k resolution uses pixels of 3840×2160 versus standard high definition pixels of 1920 x 1080.

It’s a world of difference and with the Roku inside your Onn television can access 4k content so you’ll see the difference for yourself.

All of these models come with 3 HDMI ports and a port for a LAN cable for connecting your internet, though this is not required if you prefer to go the wireless route.

In that case, you can simply enter your login credentials when you are setting up the television and then your Onn TV does the rest. You also have 1 USB connection, 1 optical, 1 coax, 1 composite, and 1 headphone connection.

Now that we have an overall view of the technical side of it, what you can connect, and what comes standard in these models, we’re going to review a few of those TVs individually to give you a more focused look that hopefully includes the size which you are considering.

We did have a few qualms with the products, chiefly in refresh rate and the sound, which was decent but not as loud as we would have liked. Also, we should note, while these are not ‘Smart TVs’ and the ‘Smart’ reference is simply a nod to the Roku.

That said, let’s see how the individual models compare.

42, 50, and 70-inch Onn TVs – How Do They Rate Individually?

To give you the best idea of the Onn offerings we are going to review the smaller 42-inch, the medium-level 50-inch, and the largest of the 3, the 70-inch model. We didn’t see as much variance as we would like on some of the key features as you will notice when you read the reviews.

Dimensions and weight are included just in case you have a special spot in mind and need them. With these prices, they are difficult to pass up but pay close attention to each review in case a specific requirement does not meet your exact standards.

The Onns cover a lot of bases but they do take a few shortcuts.

Onn. 42” Class FHD (1080P) LED Roku Smart TV

Our first Onn model to review is the 42” 1080p LED Roku Smart TV. This model is the only listing reviewed today that is NOT Ultra-high definition, so if you want a 4k television then you’ll want to skip to the next model reviewed.

That said, if you are looking for an excellent monitor for your desktop or laptop computer, this is a great value and the price is amazing.

Primary features and stats for this model include the following:

  • Price: $88
  • Dimensions: 37.4” x 23.5” x 8.7” (with stand)
  • Weight: 13.2 pounds
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Connections: 3 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Composite, 1 Optical, 1 Coax, 1 LAN and 1 Headphone jack

Our Review

As far as performance, the 1080p looks crisp, and with the Roku working in tandem you can take a break from work on the computer and entertain yourself properly.

The 8watt speakers are good for a decent amount of distance but are not going to fill up the room. You may want to invest in a Soundbar or some external speakers of your choice.

As far as a gaming monitor, we’d rate this as good but certainly not excellent. It’s got a 60hz refresh rate and this will be adequate for gaming but you really want a 120 for a smoother experience. That’s not to say that this is bad, you can still have a great time gaming, but it won’t be as seamless as a 120 hz.

At 13.2 pounds it’s not very heavy but heavy enough to sit securely on the included stand. The stand itself, however, is not going to withstand a lot of rocking so a wall mount might be preferable unless this is on a desk against the wall.

Performance at a Glance

Overall performance can be summarized in the following pros and cons:

Pros

  • Subtract the average Roku price and it’s a $55 gaming monitor
  • Roku-enhancement provides thousands of free channels
  • Easy to replace if the kids break it

Cons

  • The stand is not as durable as we would have liked
  • 120 Hz resolution would be better for gaming

Onn. 50” Class 4K UHD (2160P) LED Roku Smart TV HDR

Our first entry to include 4k resolution, this 50” model has 4 HDMI ports for your external devices such as DVD, Blue Ray players, and more.  It’s also a good size for a bedroom television without getting overly fancy.

Primary features and stats for this model include the following:

  • Price: $243
  • Dimensions: 44.23 x 28 x 9
  • Weight: 25.2 pounds
  • Resolution: 4k Ultra-high definition
  • Connections: 4 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Composite, 1 Optical, 1 Coax, 1 LAN and 1 Headphone jack

Our Review

You get the 4k resolution but there are some caveats. With this resolution, many TVs offer 99% of the sRGB color, while this rates at about 96.7%. You’ve also got the same 60hz refresh rate and we would have liked to see something higher.

That said, the TV does look good, but in darker movies, the black colors may not be as crisp as you are hoping for.

We find at the current sRGB level for this television we are getting the 4k detail but it’s blurred compared to some other name brand models such as Samsung. The speakers are good but are definitely not going to thump the windows.

Now, blurred 4k is still quite a step up from 1080p and you might never notice the difference but we would be amiss if we did not mention it. Finally, we didn’t like the stand on this one either and felt it could be a lot more durable.

You don’t want the kids knocking it over so a wall mount would be ideal for this television.

Performance at a Glance

Overall performance can be summarized in the following pros and cons:

Pros

  • Great entry-level 4k television
  • Roku provides an inexhaustible amount of entertainment content
  • The extra HDMI port gives you 1 more expansion option

Cons

  • Still limited to 60hz refresh rate
  • sRGB rating is slightly less than expected
  • Sound quality

Onn. 70” Class 4K UHD (2160P) LED Roku Smart TV HDR

Our final entry is this whopping 70-inch Onn 4k Ultra-definition television and at less than $450 it’s a lot of TV for the money.

Unfortunately, the biggest difference in this model seems to be the size. Let’s break down what you get in a little more detail so that you can see what we mean.

Primary features and stats for this model include the following:

  • Price: $448
  • Dimensions: 61.5 x 38.3 x 12.5
  • Weight: 45.2 pounds
  • Resolution: 4k Ultra-high definition
  • Connections: 3 HDMI, 1 USB, 1 Composite, 1 Optical, 1 Coax, 1 LAN and 1 Headphone jack

Our Review

We were a little surprised to see that this Onn TV only has 3 HDMI connectors instead of the 4 which come with the 50-inch one. That said, you do get 10-watt speakers with this model and the sound is pretty good.

The larger picture does seem to give you an appreciable difference in detail. While it still suffers the 96.7 sRGB limitation, you still get a good-looking picture.

As it turns out, all of these models have the same 60hz refresh rate and we were a little disappointed in that. A rate of 120 was the minimum we would expect with this and a 240 would be even better.

This won’t mean a lot for casual viewing but if you are looking for a high-end gaming television then that 60hz may be a disappointment.

Black colors were not as crisp as we were hoping for and you might need to tinker with the brightness to find your optimal setting.

You are getting a lot of detail but we were hoping for more bells and whistles with the 70 inch. It’s basically the 50-inch but bigger and with 1 less HDMI connector and we felt it could be better.

As with the previous 2 models, the included stand hasn’t really changed, only the television weight, and so this is definitely a TV you’ll want to mount if you’ve got cats chasing each other around the house or children who like roughhousing.

Performance at a Glance

Overall performance can be summarized in the following pros and cons:

Pros

  • It’s large and thin so this TV gets attention
  • Roku makes your big TV a very entertaining one
  • The larger image size gives you better detail for this lower end 4K television
  • The 10-watt speakers provide good sound

Cons

  • 1 less HDMI connector
  • The stands could a redesign or stronger materials
  • Basically just a bigger version of the 50”

Final Verdict

As far as the televisions reviewed, the 50-inch was our favorite. You get an extra HDMI and essentially the same features that come in the largest reviewed model. That said, this is a better TV for a personal room than for your living room.

With the sRGB variance, you might want to put something higher end in your main entertainment center. If you are not so sure about getting an Onn TV, check out the best affordable TVs on Amazon now!

Conclusion

Today we have talked about the general features of the Onn TVs and provided you with a detailed review of the 3 best models. They are not as high-quality TVs as you would get with the companies like Samsung or LG.

Even so, these are impossible to beat at the price so while it won’t blow your socks off these are a decent introduction to the new 4k standard. You’ll definitely see the difference.
